Whether Ernest Hemingway or folks at Dreamworks or Disney, a salute to Kilimanjaro is a given as they scripted these epics. From The Snows of Kilimanjaro to Madagascar: Escape to Africa to Lion King, if there is a mention of Africa, there will be Kilimanjaro in it. With its three volcanos (2 extinct and one dormant) – Mawenzi, Shira and Kibo, Kilimanjaro has 5 climatic zones.
Legend has it that Kibo and Mawenzi were good neighbours, until Mawenzi played a prank on Kibo and threw away embers he had received from Kibo and claimed that they had burned out. Kibo eventually got angry and beat Mawenzi badly, explaining why the mountain is so badly degraded. Mawenzi means “the Battered”.
Whether the battered or not, this will be an Epic Lifetime Journey for you.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, Arusha. After meet and greet with our team outside the immigration and transfer to Moshi town. Check in and start the pre-climb preparation, briefing and an acclimatization night.
Marangu gate – Mandara Hut 2720m
Transfer to the Mount Kilimanjaro Park Headquarters at Marangu Gate for registration.
About halfway (1.5 hrs from the gate), you have a choice between two routes - you can choose to cross the stream and rejoin the main trail, or continue on the forest trail. Decisions about how adventurous your trip is going to be starts here.
Overnight at Mandara Hut. It's a Montane forest zone, 3 to 4 hours trek, 7 km,
Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut 3720m
Mount Kilimanjaro has 6 different ecological systems: cultivated land, rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and arctic summit.
From Mandara Hut the trail passes through a short stretch of forest and skirts the base of Maundi Crater, you cross a meadow and a wooded stream, then emerge into grassland. (What did we say!)
Horombo Hut is reached after about six hours and is 11km from Mandara. Overnight at Horombo Hut.
Montane forest, Heather and Moorland zone, 5 to 6 hours of trek, 11 km.
Today, from Horombo Hut, trek up the upper route to Zebra rocks and continue to the "saddle". The "saddle" lies between the two peaks (Kibo and Mawenzi).
At this point you have magnificent views of the countryside across Kibo Desert.
We return to Horombo Hut for lunch and relax in the afternoon. Overnight at Horombo Hut for acclimatization.
Heather, Moorland and Alpine desert, 3 to 4 hours of trek. 5 - 8 km.
Horombo - Kibo Hut -
Today, take the direct trail to Mawenzi Hut or Mawenzi Tarn and across the saddle to Kibo Hut. The landscape is rockier and rugged. Remember the "Battered" legend?
Overnight at the Kibo Hut.
Heather, Moorland and Alpine Desert, 5 to 6 hours trek, 12 km.
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak -
Its the day you conquer the Mount Kilimanjaro's Kibo's highest peak - Uhuru Peak!
For an epic day, it's important to start the day early, or rather almost at mid night.
The trek that starts at 2 am or earlier, walk to Hans Meyer Cave for a rest. Then continue to Johannes Notch and Gillmans Point, follow the trail beyond Stella Point to Uhuru Peak. Later, descend to Kibo hut, stop for a meal and continue to descend to Horombo for the overnight stay.
Did you know?
Nearly every climber who has scaled the Uhuru Peak, the highest summit on Kibo’s crater rim, have recorded their thoughts in a book stored in a wooden box at the top? Well, some legacy, eh?
Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo - 12 to 16 hours trek, 21 kms.
Continue your descent (6 hours), passing the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. Transfer to Moshi Town. Congratulations, you have just completed an epic journey!
