With glacial peaks at over 3,000m, Aoraki (Mt Cook) and Mt Tasman are sights to behold. These glaciers are unique as they are most accessible in the world. And they melt and become rivers in the emerald green temperate rainforest. And they like to dance! These glaciers are constantly advancing and retreating. This is due to the delicate balance set by the accumulation of snow in the upper glacier and ice melting in the lower part. An increase in snowfall at the nevé will result in the glacier advancing. And a faster melt will result in the glacier retreating. Overall Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers were advancing from 1985 until 2009, and are currently in a retreating phase.
It’s a must see sight!
